O ke kanaka ke kuleana o ka moe
(The privilege of man is to dream)
–Hawaiian Proverb
From small place
Of impenetrable rain forests
And lush hidden valleys,
Plunging waterfalls,
Where deer, goats, and boars
Roam among giant fern, eucalypti,
To orange suns turning
The island magenta
In ancient sunsets,
And silver moons turning
Taro patches and rice paddies
In ghost-blues.
The Polynesia of the past,
Of talk-soft legends and taboos,
Still whispering of terrible decades,
Unspeakable generations …
From choosing the tree
Right down to carving
The canoe for the sea.
